Response to a Letter to the Editor

"Time for change, but not government-run health care"

Is the use of the word "socialism" enough, is that all it takes for you to fear change?
Is a national [government run] POSTAL SYSTEM, socialism? Is a national hurricane center socialism? Is a national education system, a national guard? Is the Coast Guard, socialism because it is a NATIONAL SOLUTION?

Merely because we work together doesn't make it inherently evil? We have city governments, county, state and national governments each to solve certain problems, by pooling resources, we solve big problems.

We decided that we would encourage workers to own homes, we decided on a national level that soldiers who served should have national help to attend college. Nationally we decided that the "free market" should be compelled to pay a MINIMUM WAGE. We decided that children shouldn't work. That children under 16 should attend schools. These were regarded by "conservative" opinion makers, as unnecessary interference in the "FREE MARKET".

Society benefited, from these advances. Medical care, guided strictly by a profit-making principle has gotten us to a place where company's have placed the costs of healthcare beyond the reach of many working Americans. Thoughtful progressive minded Americans have analyzed the problem and proposed a solution of that would diminish the significance of the profit motive.

The purpose of Health Care reform is to improve access to healthcare for all Americans. We have made a compact with our society to provide emergency care, why is a Healthy America such a cause of fear in so many. Is a healthy America where parents can get necessary medicine for their children or when grandma needs surgery, she can get it without Bankrupting her children, really a EVIL CONCEPT? Why does this frighten you? Why are you so fearful? Why is a system that enriches a few, while bankrupting thousands a better idea? Defend that ! Explain why Insurance Company CEOs making millions is a better idea, Explain that!

We work together to obtain clean water, we work together to educate our children, why can't we pool our resources, and make Americans healthier? I think a healthy America is a patriotic idea!

  1. Mr Spisak,

What is wrong with making money off of providing people with healthcare insurance? Shouldn't things cost money? With your logic, I shouldn't have to pay for water just because I get thirsty. Insurance company CEOs should make millions because they provide a service to their customers at a good price, if they didn't, they wouldn't be in buisness, Econ 101. My insuance company's CEO is a millionaire, I get good coverage and at a good price. He should be a millionaire because he makes me happy along with enough other people to make him wealthy. As far as Grandma getting a surgery without bankrupting her kids, where is the money coming from? Someone has to pay, lemme guess, you want to raise taxes on the rich CEOs? Then what happens to the CEOs employees, or the rates of his customers (me?). I get it now, you want healthcare, but you don't want to pay for it, sounds typical.

You want to cut the cost of healthcare? So did Pol Pot; instead of using guns to kill people, he mostly used lead pipes because bullets cost money. I am fine with my healthcare costing a good portion of my money. A few years ago, I broke my wrist. I had no insurance, I had no money. I went to a doctor's office and made a deal with him. I made it in his best interest to ensure that I am healthy. If I was not healthy, I wouldn't have been able to be productive and pay him back.

When Alexander Hamilton created the first national debt, he called it a national blessing. Why? Because then it is in the best interest to out debtors that we prosper. Think about it, wouldn't you want to be in debt to a doctor?

You use the word "bankrupting" as a scare tactic. Much like those you claim to use "socialism." Why are you afraid of bankrupcy? The number 1 reason for people filing bankrupcy is divorce, and that is a voluntary thing as opposed to unexpected medical bills. As far as enriching few, how many people are employed by a health insurance company, ask them how they feel about a public option.

My ancestors came here to escape European style socialism. They came here to create their own destiny, because they were tired of goverment creating it for them. They were small buisness owners, car dealers and railroad engineers. They took care of themselves because they had to, because they were in a system that rewards taking care of yourself. Now, in a socialized healthcare system, what is the reward for staying healthy and taking care of yourself? Is it its own reward? If you think so, you are very naive.

Why don't you explain why you want a system that has killed millions in other countries (Nazis in German Nationalized healthcare, the Kremlin in Russia, Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and the list goes on) implemented in America, EXPLAIN THAT! Explain why you want to step further into totalitarianism, EXPLAIN THAT! Explain why you think my money should take are of your problems, EXPLAIN THAT! Explain why my scirosis of the liver should be taken care of by the tax payer if I'm an alcoholic, or why should my lung cancer be taken care of by the tax payer even if I smoke two packs a day, or my brain surgery be taken care of even if I fell off my motorcycle with no helmet. Why should I be taken care of by the government for my stupid decisions? EXPLAIN THAT!
